On opposing sides there is a projecting spout, that on the left covered by a moulded leaf. The top is formed by a plate with a slightly concave sloping rim, and shallow well. The top is printed overall with ‘Tiber’ pattern, comprising a view of boats on the Tiber with the Ponte Sant’Angelo, the Castello Sant’Angelo, Trajan’s Column, and St Peter’s in the background. On either side there are trees and bushes. Round the edge there is a narrow border of ovals and interlacing wavy lines. On the exterior of the lower part there are four repeats of the view. Drakard and Holdway described this as one of Spode’s finest designs. It was a combination of two engravings by J. Merigot published in his Views of Rome and its Vicinity, London, 1796-98. It is not strictly topographical: Trajan’s Column and the trees were inserted.
Decoration composed of ceramic printing colour ( cobalt oxide)
