In the interior of a peasant's cottage an old woman is scolding her weeping daughter, whom she has surprised with her lover. He is seen through the open door escaping, having left his hat behind on the floor.
History note: Eugène de Wassermann, Brussels; bt. Hermann Metter, 1920s; sold (Sotheby’s) 20-21 April 1959, lot 70, from a ‘portfolio’ of 31 proof impressions; bt. ‘Warren’ for £680; 24 of which purchased by the Fitzwilliam for £300.
