Description

Beginning in 1898, the Board of Revenue introduced a new control to prevent abuse of the coinage. A character from the Thousand Character Classic (an ancient poem written with a thousand characters frequently used as a numbering system) was added to the reverse. The character changed each quarter, in order to date the coin's production. Guang Xu: reign/era title.
