Note

Alan Peters OBE (1933-2009) was one of the most distinguished furniture designer/makers of the 20th century. Apprenticed to Edward Barnsley, he set up his own workshop in the 1960s and was awarded OBE in 1990. These chairs are a particularly fine example of Asian design on Peter’s work: the forward positioning of the lumbered splat is a typical feature of Chinese chairs from the 17th century onwards.

The chairs were part of a suite of furniture commissioned for the Chairman's Office and meeting room of the TSB Group at 25 Milk Street, London, by Sir Nicholas Goodison, in 1990. The suite was later sold by TSB. Several other pieces are also now in the Fitzwilliam collection, including a pair of side tables and a console table.
