Box in the shape of a trunk, lacquer with gilt metal fittings. Rectangular box with rounded corners and overhanging lid (A) which is finely decorated in gold hiramakie (low-relief sprinkled design) with black details, with two cranes, their wings spread to form a circle amid scrolling foliage on a nashiji (shimmering spangles) ground. The lower part is similarly decorated with six cranes amid scrolling foliage on a nashiji ground. The recessed base is sectioned into two by a central raised panel and decorated with nashiji on a black lacquer ground. The interior of the cover is black with nashiji; the interior of the lower part is black with nashiji and lined with paper applied with silver and gold flakes. The cover is applied with six gilt metal fittings, four trefoil on the corners and two quatrefoil above the handles, finely tooled with scrolling foliage. The four corners of the lower section are similarly protected with trefoil fittings. The two long sides are each mounted with a T-shaped gilt metal fitting with a hinged stirrup-shape fitting above a slender cord ring threaded with yellow twine bound with fine gold thread and extending over the cover.
