Lacquer box, ko-bako (box for the incense ceremony). Box, lacquer. Square box with deep sides and indented corners with a seated lid (A). The black ground is decorated in gold hiramakie (low-relief sprinkled design) with sprays of flowers and scrolling foliage which ramble over the box and lid; the rims are in gold lacquer. The interior and the base are brown/black lacquer.
