Description

Lacquer box and smaller box. Box, lacquer. Rectangular box with an overhanging lid (A) of convex form with two cut-away sides, containing a smaller box (B) of the same shape. It is decorated all over with a white-crackled ground of inlaid eggshell and decorated on the lid in hiramakie (low-relief sprinkled design) and takamakie (high-relief sprinkled design) in gold, red and black with seven cranes in flight. The rim is finely edged in gold, red and black. The base and interior are in nashiji covered with a thick layer of red-brown lacquer. The smaller box is similarly decorated; the lid (C) has a gold and black rim.
