MS 34, Fitzwilliam Missal

This missal, containing all the texts for the Christian Mass throughout the year, was produced in York c.1470 for the Fitzwilliam family. Medieval books were expensive to produce, as materials like parchment, pigments and gold were very costly, as was the expert labour to produce both the texts and illustrations.

Medieval books also held sentimental and religious value and were often passed down through the generations. This book remained in the Fitzwilliam family for centuries, and many owners wrote their names on the flyleaves or annotated the Calendar at the beginning of the book. In 1816 it was bequeathed to the University of Cambridge by Richard, 7th Viscount Fitzwilliam (1745-1816), as part of the Fitzwilliam Museum’s founding collection.

Notes

History note: Cent. xv (cir. 1470). Preserved in Lord Fitzwilliam's family since that date. The last Lord Fitzwilliam recorded his name on the fly-leaf in 1768 and had the MS rebound (by Simier) in 1807.
