Lacquer box for the incense ceremony. Box, lacquer with lid (A). Rectangular box with two cut-away sides, in the shape of two fans. The dull gold ground is decorated in black, red, orange, brown, green and gold in hiramakie (low-relief sprinkled design), and the top and base of the fan are moulded with raised diaper pattern/brocade borders in gold. One fan is decorated with a seated noble, his attendants and five court ladies in flowing robes, and the other fan depicts nine small figures beside two rice stooks (?). The sides of the box are decorated with six fans?/kites and eight shells/pearls. The interior and the base are decorated with nashiji (shimmering spangles). The lid fits on either way round.
