Note

Drypoint, aquatint and mezzotint with stipple effects printed in dark brown ink on heavy Japanese paper. Signed in the margin at lower right: 'A. Legros'. An early impression of the second state (of which Dodgson records 20 impressions) before the drypoint burrs in the area of the hair were worn down; the raised burrs here have protected the lines from ink and describe silvery white hairs on the head. The Dodgson (Legros) index indicates that 208 is a portrait of the French art critic, Mario Proth (1832-1891). The printed title on the mount describes this print as 'No 205, Tête de Mendiant', which is reflected in Beraldi's 1889 supplement to Malassis and Thibaudeau's catalogue, but which is now attributed to Dodgson 208, 'Tête d'Homme' (portrait of Mario Proth). An impression of this print in the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale bears inscriptions which record both the Beraldi supplement number and title and the Dodgson number with reference to Mario Proth (See IFN-10545647). One of 20 prints on mounts printed with numbers and titles and contained inside a portfolio half-bound with green cloth (spine and corners) and grey paper and with printed title: 'Eaux-fortes / par Alphonse Legros.'. Acquisition information at lower centre written in pen and ink (probably by John Charrington): 'Given by Prof. A. Legros / 24 May 1879'. The inside of the front board bears the stamp of the London-based mounter and frame-maker, Robert Guéraut who published Legros' etchings after 1863 and who also collected Legros' prints.
