Description

After the painting (on panel) by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1826; exh. R.A. 1828, no. 463; Royal Collection Trust, Waterloo Chamber, Windsor Castle, RCIN 400553. One of the portraits of leaders of the wartime coalition against Napoleon commissioned of Lawrence by George IV). Lawrence's portrait of John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon (1751-1838), a lawyer and Tory politician was painted between 1824 and 1826 when the sitter was an old man in his 70s. Half-length, seated, facing front,right arm resting on the arm of a chair. He wears a double-breasted coat buttoned at the left, with waistcoat visible and cravat at the neck. His white hair is worn short.

Note

Etching and engraving on chine collé, printed in black ink. Scratched letter proof before title with later engraved publication line. Scratched letters below the image to the left and right: 'Painted by Sir Tho.s Laurence [sic] P.R.A. &c &c &c' ... 'Eng.d by Geo T Doo Eng.r to H.R.H. the late Duke of York'. The date scratched below to the right: '1827'. Publication line engraved in roman letters just above the platemark: 'Published, May 1828 by Colnaghi Son & Co Pall Mall East, London'. Inscribed in graphite on the sheet at lower centre: 'Presented by Dominick Colnaghi Esq / 14 Pall Mall East'. Inscribed in graphite on the verso: '3' [encircled]. The British Museum has an impression of a later state of the plate after the title was added: 1841,0809.135.
