Description

After the painting by Ferdinand Bol (1616-1680), (1651; The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg [as 'Portrait of an old woman with the bible on her lap'] acquired in 1779 from the Robert Walpole collection at Houghton Hall, ??-763). An old woman, three quarter length and seated towards the left, looking out at the spectator. She wears a dark cloak around her shoulders fastened with a jewelled clasp and her head is covered with a piece of dark cloth or hood. A large book lies open on her lap, a pair of eyeglasses held in her right hand resting on the right-hand pages. Another large book is seen on a table to the left.

Notes

History note: The inscription '73 / Kerrich' written onto this print by a past curator may relate to a handwritten Museum register of loose Kerrich prints, possibly to the 'portfolio marked PB' in which 72 loose prints are listed.

Mezzotint with etching, printed in black ink. As published. Lettered with artists' names below the image at lower left: 'F. Boll Pinxit. / G. Farington delin.t' and lower right: 'R. Earlom fecit.'. Publisher's name and date below image at centre: 'J. Boydell excudit 1775'. Below, the title engraved in closed letters to either side of the engraved arms of the Earl of Orford: 'A LADY READING' and below in italics to either side of the arms: 'In the Gallery at Houghton'. At lower left: 'Size of the Picture 3f, 3 1/2i by 4f, 3i in height.' Publisher's name and date engraved just above the platemark to either side of the arms: 'Published Nov.r 1st 1775 by JOHN BOYDELL Engraver in Cheapside LONDON'. Inscribed in graphite on the sheet at lower right (curatorial hand): '73 / Kerrich' (See Provenance note). Another impression of the same state is in the first of the two Boydell Houghton volumes bequeathed in 1816 by Lord Fitzwilliam; 'A Set of Prints Engraved after the Most Capital Paintings in the Collection of Her Imperial Majesty the Empress of Russia, Lately in the Possession of the Earl of Orford at Houghton in Norfolk, Volume 1'. See, 31.K.7-25. An impression of the first state before all letters, P.2761-1945, was given by Louis G. Clarke.
