Description

After the painting by Frans Snyders (1579-1657) and Jan Boeckhorst ['Long John'] (1605-1668), (between 1618 and 1621, The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, [as 'Greengrocery Stall' with additional attribution of landscape to Jan Wildens (1586-1653)], entered the Hermitage in 1779; acquired from the R. Walpole collection, Houghton Hall, England, ??-598). A scene at a vegetable market where baskets full of cabbages, onions and squashes fill the left side of the composition. A horse reaches its head from outside the picture plane to smell the cabbages. A female customer wearing a wide-brimmed hat on the right carries a basket laden with artichokes and asparagus and is engaged in buying carrots from the female stallholder. The customer is unaware that a small boy crouching at the centre is emptying her purse of money as she haggles.

Notes

History note: An encircled 'K' in the FM annotated Nagler and large 'K' in the annotated Wessely (Earlom) refer to this Kerrich print. This print is recorded in a handwritten Museum register of loose Kerrich prints as no. 6 ('after Synders & Long John by Earlom 'the Herb Market' [mezzot.] / Houghton Coll.) in the Kerrich 'Portfolio marked Py'.

Publisher's details and title engraved to either side of the Earl of Orford's arms: 'John Boydell excudit 1779' / [in closed roman capitals] 'A HERB MARKET. / [in engraved italics] In the Gallery at Houghton / Size of the picture 6f, 10i by 11f 2i in length ... Published Nov.r 13th 1779 by John Boydell Engraver in Cheapside London.' Inscribed in graphite at lower right (curatorial hand): 'Kerrich'. Inscribed in graphite in the margins at upper left: '8/5 [price: 8 shillings and 5 pence]' and at upper centre, an auction reference: '1st Day lot 7'. Inscribed in graphite in large script on the verso: '357'. An impression of the first state before title is in the first of the two Boydell Houghton volumes bequeathed in 1816 by Lord Fitzwilliam; 'A Set of Prints Engraved after the Most Capital Paintings in the Collection of Her Imperial Majesty the Empress of Russia, Lately in the Possession of the Earl of Orford at Houghton in Norfolk, Volume 1'.
