Description

After the painting by Frans Snyders (1579-1657) and Jan Boeckhorst ['Long John'] (1605-1668), (between 1618 and 1621, The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, [as 'Fruit Stall' with additional attribution of landscape to Jan Wildens (1586-1653)], entered the Hermitage in 1779; acquired from the R. Walpole collection, Houghton Hall, England, ??-596). A scene at a fruit market; a large table laden with baskets of fruit at centre right, including a basket of apricots which a monkey is in the process of tipping over. A squirrel sits on the upper edge of the basket. Below the table are baskets of melons, pears, grapes, pomegranates and pineapples. To the left, a female customer carrying a basket of purchases on her left arm tests the firmness of apricots taken from a plate held by the stall holder. The customer's dog barks at something or someone unseen.
