Mezzotint. Proof before title with artists' names engraved in the inscription space to the left: 'G. Romney p.t' and to the right: 'H. Hudson fe'. Inscribed in graphite on the sheet at lower centre: 'John, The 2nd Lord Henniker'. Kidson suggests that the portrait was commissioned to mark Henniker's becoming an M.P. for New Romney in 1785, as the lettering of Hudson's print published the following year describes him as 'one of the Barons of the Cinque Ports for New Romney'. See BM 1902,1011.2744, for an impresssion bearing this inscription in the margins. Kidson adds that Hudson's print was probably issued as a private plate. See Notes.
