Description

After the portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1777-78; Mannings, 1268; Tate Britain, N04694). Mary Monckton (1745-1840) seen full-length, seated on a stone wall in a parkland landscape, a stone urn on a plinth to the right upon which she rests her left elbow. A spaniel sleeps at her feet in the right foreground. Looking out at the spectator, her right arm crossing her body and the index finger of her left hand pressed to the corner of her mouth.

Note

Mezzotint. Scratched letter proof, trimmed to the platemark and within the platemark along the lower edge meaning that the publisher's details are missing. Scratched letters with title and production details: 'Painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds'; 'Engraved by John Jacobé ['cobé' touched with pen and ink]'; 'The Hon.ble Miss Monckton' [lower edges of letters trimmed]. The scratched letters identify the proof as that published by Sarah Sledge. Inscribed on the verso in graphite: 'J.C.S. [Chaloner Smith] 6 I cut at foot'; 'CBM [Charles Brinsley Marlay]'; 'Proof [?print]'. P.19-1957 is a different state published by Boydell in 1781 (Chaloner Smith, 6.II).
