After the portrait by Thomas Phillips (1837; exh. R.A.S. 1838 and R.A. 1839, no. 345; Royal Astronomical Society). Standing three-quarter-length, facing front, head turned slightly towards the right, left hand resting along with a pair of spectacles on a manuscript open on a table titled 'Pendulum Experiments'. The titles of books stacked on the table include, 'Baily's Life of Flamsteed' and 'Newton's life and Works'.

Mezzotint on chine collé. Proof before title. Engraved in open roman letters at lower left: 'PAINTED BY THOMAS PHILLIPS, R.A.' and at lower right: 'ENGRAVED BY THOMAS LUPTON' and address below engraved in italics, '4 Keppel Street, Russell Square'. Engraved in italics at the centre below the image: 'From the Picture painted for the Royal Astronomical Society'. Sitter's signature and position reproduced in facsimile on the plate at lower right: 'Francis Baily / President of the Roy: Ast: Soc:'. Inscribed in graphite on the sheet at lower centre: 'Selected India Proof Fitzwilliam Museum'. Inscribed on the recto in graphite beyond the platemark at upper centre: '28' and on the verso: '14'.
