Description

After the painting by Copley (1799; National Gallery, Scotland, NG 2661). The scene shows Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan (1731 - 1804) on the deck of his ship, Venerable, receiving the submission of the enemy in the form of the sword presented to him by Dutch Admiral, Jan Willem de Winter, whose ship, Vrijheid can be seen all aflame in the background. Duncan was a British Admiral who defeated the Dutch fleet off Camperdown (north of Haarlem) on 11 October 1797.

History note: The Fitzwilliam album reference number, 33.A.10-154, is given faintly in the margin of the FM marked-up copy of Chaloner Smith and also in pen and ink in Nagler.

Mezzotint. After inscription, with title engraved in open letters (before 'FAA.' was changed to 'F.A.S.' and before the additional name of 'George' was erased from the inscription, as seen in the third and final state with closed letters). Trimmed to the platemark. Artists' names scratched at lower left and lower right: 'Painted by J.S. Copley Esq. R.A. FAA.' and 'Engraved by James Ward, Painter & Engraver in Mezzotinto to H.R.H. the P. of Wales'. Engraved in open uppercase roman letters below the image at centre: 'THE VICTORY OF LORD DUNCAN'. Scratched dedication and publication details below: 'To the right Honourable George John Spencer, Earl Spencer, Viscount Althorp / First Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty, Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. L.L.D. &c.&c.&c. / This Work is by his Lordship's permission respectfully Dedicated by his Lorship's much obliged and most humble Servant, J.S. Copley. / London Published Aug.t 1800 by J.S. Copley, George Street, Hanover Square'. Inscribed in graphite on the verso with Lord Fitzwilliam's mounting instruction (line on the horizotal axis) and number, '101'.
