Description

After the painting by George Clint (c.1827; Scene from Paul Pry; V&A (Sheepshanks Gift, 1857), FA.21[O]). A scene from Paul Pry (1825), a farce in three acts by John Poole (1786-1872), which was first performed at the Haymarket Theatre on 13th September, 1825. The actor, John Liston, as 'Paul Pry', stands with his umbrella in a drawing room interior pointing the finger of his right hand at two ladies and a gentleman standing to the left; Phyllis Glover as 'Phoebe', Madame Vestris as 'Eliza' and Mr Williams as 'Colonel Hardy'.

Mezzotint and etching. Lettered with artists' names, at lower left: 'Painted by G. Clint A.R.A.' and lower right: 'Engraved by Thomas Lupton'. Scratched at lower centre: 'The Portraits of' and then title lettered below in half-filled letters: MADAME VESTRIS, MISS P. GLOVER, MR WILLIAMS & MR LISTON'. Dialogue below: "PHOEBE - No one shall enter this room. We stand upon our honour; / and if you doubt my young lady's, what is to become / of mine, I should like to know? "PAUL PRY - I can't possibly say Mrs. Phoebe, but I would advise you to / look well after it, for I protest, there he is". At lower left: 'Printed by J Lahee'; lower centre left: 'From the original Picture in the Possession of T. Griffiths Esqr.'; lower centre right: 'Published July 1, 1828, by Moon, Boys & Graves, 6 Pall Mall'. Inscribed in graphite on the verso: 'CBM [Charles Brinsley Marlay]'. The plate was republished in 1853 by Thomas Boys, see BM 1902,1011.3153.
