(After)
A stemmed, glass vase on a shelf containing an arrangement of Summer flowers; peonies, roses and stephanotis.
History note: VanSittart gave 1,485 engravings to the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1879 and this mezzotint was probably included within this group. The number written in large script on the verso almost certainly relate to some kind of count by curators at the time of the acquisition.
Given by Augustus Arthur VanSittart, ?1879

Mezzotint. An early impression with the painter's name only in scratched letters and before the addition of 'pinxit'. Nagler gives the dates for this plate as 1691 and notes that the earliest impressions from this plate are without writing or with scratched letters only. The second state of the plate is engraved below the image, to the left: 'J Baptiste Monnoyer pinxit' and to the right: 'J Smith fecit & excudit.' (See BM 1876,1111.21). The plate was reworked after the second state (See BM 1855,0512.90). There is a copy in reverse by Pieter Schenk (Hollstein 477). Inscribed in pen and ink (possibly in VanSittart's hand) at lower right corner: 'Smith' and on the verso: '1991'. Inscribed in graphite on the verso: 'Vansittart Collection'; '524 (2)'. A collector's mark written in pen and ink on the verso at upper right: 'J:Bn' can be identified as that of John Barnard (1709-1784), whose sale of prints following his death was held in London in 1798 (Thomas Philipe, 16 April 1798, for 26 days). However, as has been pointed out by Nick Stogdon, there had been a sale of Barnard's first collection much earlier in 1752 at Langford's, Covent Garden for 8 days, from 20th-27th February ('A Catalogue of a Genuine and Choice Collection of Italian, Flemish and other valuable Prints, and complete Sets, By the most eminent Engravers.').
