Description

After the painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1816; exh. R.A. 1816, no. 25; Winchester College). Portrait of William Howley (1766-1848), who was Bishop of London, 1813-1828 and Archbishop of Canterbury from 1828. Seated, three-quarter-length, turned alightly towards the right, head turned towards the left. Wearing a short wig, voluminous white surplice with preaching bands and tippet. He holds a document or letter in his lap.

Note

Mezzotint. Fully-lettered state, before the letters were strengthened to produce thick and thin lettering (See note in Whitman referencing BM: 1902,1011.5597, where this is the case and which represents a state between I and II). Engraved in light (i.e. faint), open, roman letters with artists' names at lower left: 'Painted by Sir Tho.s Lawrence R.A. Principal Painter in Ordinary to His Majesty' and at lower right: 'Engraved by C. Turner, Warren Street Fitzroy Square'. Title in light, open roman capitals: 'WILLIAM HOWLEY, D.D. F.R.S. / Lord Bishop of London'. Publication details in light open roman letters: 'London, Pub.d July 28, 1817, by Messrs Colnaghi and Co. Cockspur Street, Haymarket'. Inscribed in pen and ink below the printed title: 'and Archbishop of Canterbury'. P.13953-R is an impression of a proof before all letters.
