Description

After the portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1825; exh. R.A. 1826, no. 101; Private Collection (The Earl Peel)) following addition of title; See also exh. cat, Thomas Lawrence: Regency Power & Brilliance (NPG, 2010), Fig. 18, p.17, reproduced in colour; Private Collection). Three-quarter-length, standing facing front, head turned towards the right. His right hand rests on a table to the left and left hand is placed on his hip. Wears frock-coat with part velvet collar and velvet waistcoat with pocket-watch chain visible and cravat at the neck. A wedding ring is prominently displayed on the third finger of his left hand.

Mezzotint on chine collé. Proof before title. Engraved 'reeded' border on the plate around the image. Artists' names engraved in upper and lowercase roman letters on the plate at lower left: 'Painted by Sir Thomas Lawrence, Principal Painter in Ordinary to His Majesty, P.R.A., &c. &c. &c.' and lower right: 'Engraved by C. Turner Mezzotinto Engraver in Ordinary to His Majesty'. At lower right: 'Printed by J. Lahee' and at lower centre, engraved in italics: 'Pall Mall East, London, Published Dec.r 26 1827 by Mess.rs Colnaghi Son & Co. Printsellers to the King &c. &c.' Inscribed in graphite in the lower margins: 'Presented by Dominick Colnaghi Esq / 14 Pall Mall East'. Inscribed in graphite on the verso: encircled '4'. An impression of the first state before artists' names were added is P.13958-R.
