After the portrait by John James Halls (1814; V&A, DYCE.78). Portrait of the actor, Edmund Kean (1787-1833) in the role of Shakespeare's Richard III. Full-length, standing with knees slightly bent and arms folded and with 'tortured' eyes. He holds a truncheon in his right hand and wears boots with spurs. He wears elaborate clothing of richly embroidered cloak trimmed with ermine with silk and velvet embroidered doublet and hose and ermine-trimmed cap with pearl crown above. Stands in a darkened doorway on castle ramparts.

Mezzotint. Partially-closed letter state and following strengthening of the inscription. Engraved with artists' names at lower left and right: 'Painted by J.J. Halls' and 'Engraved by C. Turner'. Title with a line engraved inside each letter: 'M.R KEAN in RICHARD the THIRD. / ACT IV. Scene 4 - Well, as you guess?' Dedication engraved in sloping script: 'This Print is Dedicated by Permission to Samuel Whitbread Esq. MP by his very obed.t Serv.t / J.J. Halls'.
