Description

After the portrait of an unknown woman by Rubens. Three-quarter-length, seated in a chair turned towards the left, looking out at the spectator. Wears ruff and cap and dark clothing with much fur. A fur-lined muff is on her lap and her left hand is partly inside it.

Notes

History note: An encircled 'K' in the FM annotated Nagler and in the annotated Chaloner Smith refer to this print from the Kerrich Bequest. It is also is recorded in a handwritten Museum register of loose Kerrich prints as no. 17 in the Kerrich 'Portfolio marked Py', which tallies with the number written in its lower right margins. Both Chaloner Smith and Nagler make annotated reference to the Lord Fitzwilliam album of the Boydell Houghton prints, 31.K.7 ('Set of Prints engraved after the most capital paintings in the collection of Her Imperial Majesty the Empress of Russia, lately in the possession of the Earl of Orford at Houghton, Norfolk. Volume 1.'), which contains a duplicate of this print.
