Description

After the portrait of an unknown woman by Rubens. Three-quarter-length, seated in a chair turned towards the left, looking out at the spectator. Wears ruff and cap and dark clothing with much fur. A fur-lined muff is on her lap and her left hand is partly inside it.

Notes

History note: An encircled 'K' in the FM annotated Nagler and in the annotated Chaloner Smith refer to this print from the Kerrich Bequest. It is also is recorded in a handwritten Museum register of loose Kerrich prints as no. 17 in the Kerrich 'Portfolio marked Py', which tallies with the number written in its lower right margins. Both Chaloner Smith and Nagler make annotated reference to the Lord Fitzwilliam album of the Boydell Houghton prints, 31.K.7 ('Set of Prints engraved after the most capital paintings in the collection of Her Imperial Majesty the Empress of Russia, lately in the possession of the Earl of Orford at Houghton, Norfolk. Volume 1.'), which contains a duplicate of this print.

Mezzotint. Closed-letter state, as published. Trimmed. Artists' names engraved in italics below the image at left and right: 'Rubens Pinxit. / G. Farington delin.t'; 'James Watson Sculpsit.'. Publisher's name engraved below the image at the centre: 'John Boydell excudit 1778'. Title in closed letters engraved below to either side of the engraved arms of the Earl of Orford: 'LADY SITTING IN A CHAIR' and below in italics to either side of the arms: 'In the Gallery at Houghton'. At lower left: 'Size of the Picture 3f, 0 5/8i by 4f, 0 1/4i in height.' Publisher's name and date engraved just above the platemark to either side of the arms: 'Published Dec.r 1st 1778 by John Boydell Engraver in Cheapside London'. Inscribed in graphite in upper margins: '325' and at lower right: '17' and 'S.167 [Chaloner Smith]'. Another impression of the second state is in the first of the two Boydell Houghton volumes bequeathed in 1816 by Lord Fitzwilliam; 'A Set of Prints Engraved after the Most Capital Paintings in the Collection of Her Imperial Majesty the Empress of Russia, Lately in the Possession of the Earl of Orford at Houghton in Norfolk, Volume 1'.
