After the painting by Godfried Schalken, known as 'The Penitent Magdalene' (c.1670-1675; Staatliches Museum, Schwerin, Germany, 2336; Beherman, 24. The Watson mezzotint is reproduced as Beherman, 24a). See also P.33-1948 after a different version of the same subject by Schalcken. Half-length, facing left. Female figure looking down at an open book which is lit by a flame burning on a bracket at the far left.
History note: An inscribed number on the old mount, '269' may relate to either the sale lot number or a curatorial count of mezzotints in the collection.
