Description

After the portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds (c.1779; Mannings, 706; Folger Shakespeare Library, 121, which is described by Martin Postle as 'a studio replica possibly with Reynolds's participation of the previous picture', i.e. Mannings, 705, 'The Prologue Portrait', National Trust, Knole, Sevenoaks, Kent, 261). Seated half-length at a writing desk, facing front, turned slightly towards the left and looking out at the spectator. Books, ink well and quill and manuscript inscribed 'Prologue' are before him. Hands are clasped together on the desk. Wears a dark coat with lace at cuffs and at neck and a short, powdered wig. Set within a narrow rectangular frame.

Inscribed in graphite on the verso: 'CBM [ref. to Charles Brinsley Marlay]' and a price: '£6.6.0'. P.37-1952 is an impression Goodwin's state III, after title and dedication.
