After the portrait by Peter Edward Ströhling (exh. R.A., 1807, no.552). Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald (1775-1860), known as Lord Cochrane, was an admiral in the British navy. Full-length, standing on board the deck of a ship, facing front but head in three-quarter profile to the left, left foot raised on a gun carriage, right hand tucked into his jacket, left on the hilt of his sabre. Wearing naval uniform, his Admiral's cocked hat set upon the ship's deck in the left foreground. Smoke fills the background, a ship's mast seen through it to the left and rigging to the right.

Mezzotint. Proof before all letters and cleaning of the inscription space. Inscribed in graphite by the engraver at lower left: 'H. Macbeth-Raeburn Sct.' and a dedication inscribed in graphite by the same at lower right: 'To CJM Adie / from the Engraver. 1945 -'.
