The title pages of both volumes are engraved; each features an engraved vignette depicting 5 ships sailing on the ocean, with motto: "cuncta mea mecum", above 6 lines of verse by Valerius Flaccus (beginning: "O quantum terræ, quantum cognoscere cœli ...").

With an engraved frontispiece to v.1, depicting a naval officer (presumably Stedman) standing with his bayonet over the fallen body of a re-captured slave; beneath are 4 lines of verse: ""From different parents, different climes we came, / At different periods;" fate still rules the same. / Unhappy youth while bleeding on the ground; / 'Twas yours to fall - but mine to feel the wound."

Illustrated with 80 fine copperplates (some folded) from drawings by Stedman, engraved by William Blake and others. These include maps, topographical views, detailed depictions of flora and fauna, anthropological studies and portraits.
