DECORATION
Zoomorphic initial [H, 15 ll.] in red and green formed of dragon and acanthus motif, with coiling and floral infill on light blue white-patterned ground, with arms of Simonetta family, azure, a lion rampant surmounted by a crown or, grasping a cross gules, with two putti as supporters, holding cornucopias, on white-patterned magenta ground in lower margin, for the incipit of Decretum (fol.[a1]r).

ORNAMENTATION
Blue or red penwork initials [4-9 ll.] for main text divisions, most with voided ornament, some with grotesque profile, one with penwork infill; red or blue penwork initials [2 ll.] for minor text divisions; blue or red penwork initials [2-4 ll.] for commentary; red or blue paraph marks

History note: Member of the Simonetta family (arms on fol.[a1]r); Count Louis Apponyi (1849-1909); sold at auction of Count Apponyi’s library by Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, London, 10 November 1892, lot 535, to Quaritch for £40. 00s; Frank McClean (1837-1904), bookplate inside upper cover; his bequest in 1904.
