Description

Box, Lacquer. Rectangular box with a seated lid (A) and tray (B). The black ground is decorated in gold hiramakie (low-relief sprinkled design) and hirame (flat flakes of gold) with a landscape scene of pine trees beside a river and a waterfall with rocky banks and hills in the distance. The old gnarled trunk of the pine tree has uchikomi details (design details, particularly hollows in trees and rocks filled with gold particles); there are aogai (small pieces of inlaid blue/green shell) details to the water and the banks are in gold kirikane (metal foil cut and individually set into a lacquer ground, often as a mosaic). A similar and continuous design of pine trees and rocks beside a river runs around the four sides of the box. The tray stands on four bracket feet and is similarly decorated with pine trees and rocks beside a river with aogai details. The base of the tray, interior and base of the box are in gyobu-nashiji (shimmering spangles using large flakes of gold) producing a mirror-like effect.
