Description

Box, lacquer. Rectangular box with rounded sides and a seated lid (A) decorated in gold, black and brown. The lid is decorated in gold takamakie (high-relief sprinkled design) with a peacock standing on a solid gold rock and a peahen below surrounded by gold peonies on a nashiji (shimmering spangles) ground. The peacock's magnificent tail is inlaid with aogai (small pieces of blue-green inlaid shell). The sides of the box are decorated with gold floral sprays and on the two long sides there is also a butterfly on a nashiji ground.
