Description

Box, lacquer. Rectangular box in gold, brown, red, green, silver and black with rounded corners and seated lid (A) containing a tray (B). The black ground is finely sprinkled with gold in irregular patches and decorated on the lid in takamakie (high-relief sprinkled design) with a tobacco pouch designed with three groups of entwined long-tailed birds reserved on a star/brocade ground, with a red cord and a silver and gold ojime. A brown inro, with a rough finish, is decorated with chidori (plovers) in flight over waves, with a silver cord onto which is tied a lovers' knot decorated with brocades, and a red ojime. Both objects are suspended from a seal-shaped netsuke decorated with a version of the longevity character. The sides are decorated in takamakie with five shells individually decorated. The tray has four bracket feet and a gold rim, and is brightly decorated with two tobacco pouches, one with geometric design and scrolling foliage, the other with geometric design and flowering peony. The interior, base and the base of the tray are in nashiji (shimmering spangles).
