Description

Lacquer box, kogo (box for the incense ceremony). Box, lacquer with mother of pearl and silver rim mounts. Rectangular box with seated lid (A) and a tray (B). The gold fundame (matt) ground is decorated on the lid in takamakie (high-relief sprinkled design) with a mountainous landscape, a waterfall and a meandering river spanned by a bridge with pine, fir and plum in blossom. The mountains and rocks are highlighted in pink-tinged aogai (small pieces of blue-green inlaid shell). The sides of the lid and box show a similar mountain and river scene with pine, fir and plum in blossom. The mikayeshi (inside of the lid) and base are decorated in rich gold nashiji (shimmering spangles) with hirame (flat flakes of gold or silver lying on or near the surface of the lacquer) in broken ice design. The tray is similarly decorated with pine, fir and plum in blossom beside a river in takamakie on a gold fundame ground, and the underside in nashiji with hirame of gold and silver in broken ice design.
