Description

Olive green morocco, faded to brown over pulp boards, with evidence of ties. Gold tooling on covers.

Title from inscription on fly leaf.
In four manuscript hands, Scribe A (probably a professional copyist), Scribe B (Lord Herbert or Cherbury), Scribe C (Cuthbert Hely), and Scribe D (amendments to pieces by Bacheler, possibly holograph).
For further information on the possibly holograph amendments to pieces by Bacheler see Christopher Morrongiello "Notes from the scriptorum of Daniel Bacheler" (Lute notes, no. 69, April 1004, pages 11-13).
The date of the paper and the music copied by Scribe A would be before 1619 if Scribe D is Daniel Bacheler, who died in 1619. Lord Herbert copied a substantial number of pieces, mostly contemporaneously with Scribe A, but adding a few of his own dated 1626, 1627, 1628, 1639 & 1640. Cuthbert Hely's holograph music was added in the 1630s.
Watermark: "LEBE" below a large "B" ; counter mark : ship (two versions, one with three masts, another with two masts)
Former shelf numbers: 31.H.23 and 52.D; accession number MU 3-1956.
Bought at Sothebys on Thursday 17th January 1956, and given to the Fitzwilliam Museum by an anonymous donor and the Friends of the Fitzwilliam, 1956.
Former owners: "The gift of Lord Powis" -- note inside front cover in "... the penmanship of Mr Edward Jones of Henblas in the County of Merioneth, who had the honour of being stiled 'Harper to Geo IV' when Prince of Wales. W.D."
Olive green morocco, faded to brown over pulp boards, with evidence of ties. Gold tooling on covers.
