[Collection of instrumental and vocal music]

A manuscript containing four collections of music, with a miscellany between the first two: 1) 47 Italian madrigals ; 1a) miscellany of 15 madrigals, songs and fantasias by Cato, Dowland and da Rore; 2) Tisdale's virginal book, containing 47 pieces; 3) 21 English songs; 4) 9 Metrical psalms, with words by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, John Standish's compilation of Genevan psalms, John Silvester, and anon.
At least 3 different copyists, and probably more. The hands have been roughly dated 1595, 1600, 1610 and 1620. Pieces added in a different hand within any one of the four collections have been distinquished only by date.
Leaves 74-97 are said to be copied by Tisdale, and are known and published as "Tisdale's virginal book" but the two pieces by "Tisdale" may be in a different hand from most of this part of the collection.
Manuscript paper printed by "T.E." (Thomas East), 2 x 5 staves with gap (leaves 1-72), 10 staves without gap (leaves 73-125).
Watermark: Pot.
Modern foliation omits blank pages. Leaves 3v-18v are paginated "1"-"30"; leaves 19-70 have an original foliation "30"-"80", leaves 74-97 have an original foliation "1"-"24"
Former shelf mark: 52.D.25.
Former owners: John Bull, Joseph Ames, with his armorial book plate lettered "AMES of NORFOLKE".
Binding: full leather with gilded decorative tooling on sides and spine and gilded gauffered edges, with "IOHN BULL / DOCTOR OF / MUSIQVE ORG/ ANISTE AND GENT / ELMAN OF HER MAIES /TIES MOSTE HONORABLE / CHAPPELL" on the front cover, and "IOSEPH AMES" blind stamped in the oval of the central strap-work panel on both covers.
