'Going to the Battle'
Draughtsman: Burne-Jones, Edward
History note: Bought by him at the Richard Mills sale at Christie's, April 13, 1908 for £110.5s
Height: 223 mm
Width: 195 mm
Method of acquisition: Bequeathed (1927-08) by Holliday, J. R.
Production date: AD 1858 : In Burne-Jones' own list of works he gives the date as 1859, but Lady Burne-Jones added a note in pencil stating that it was done in 1858. The drawing is related to Rossetti's watercolour 'Before the Battle' in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which was completed in May 1858, but John Christian also points out that there are similarities between the bird and tree motives on the central figures' dress and the details of a hanging embroidered by Morris in about 1857, now at Kelmscott Manor; an early date therefore seems likely.
