Note

This large and proficient drawing reflects the idyllic, mediaevalized atmosphere of Morris' Red House. The girl is a likeness of Jane Morris, and the garden setting, with its rose trellises, is modelled on the Red House garden. There is a small watercolour version at Birmingham, dating from 1862, and a design on a painted cabinet in the Metropolitan Museum of New York.
