Production date: AD 1874
The subject used at Salisbury Cathedral in 1879. The large cartoons, later worked into a picture in coloured chalks, are in the Fitzwilliam (699.1-2). With its companion 'Angeli Laudantes' it was also used for tapestries by Morris and Co., of which there are examples at the Victoria and Albert Museum and in Eton College Chapel. Since the cartoons for glass are entered in Burne-Jones' account book between March and August 1878, it is probably that the date of this study 91874) was added later in error, as is the case with several drawings, when the artist had to sign and date large numbers of different studies for exhibitions. See also catalogue entry for 699.1-2.
