Note

The scene depicted is one of Atalanta's victories; she is just reaching the finishing line, watched by rows of spectators, while her competitor raiese his hands in despair. In the foreground Milanion (?) with staff and hounds, watches the race. For the poem 'Atalanta's Race', one of the stories in Morris' 'Earthly Paradise'. This is probably one of the later designs, since the composition is relatively sophisticated, and may date from 1867 or 1868.
