On accession the painting was attributed to Michael Edkins of Bristol, but this view is no longer accepted. It seems more likely that the vase was decorated in London or in South Staffordshire, possibly by the painter who signed P.F. or P.P. on water bowl in the Victoria and Albert Museum, dated 1764.
