Note

Text from object entry in A. Game (2016) ‘Contemporary British Crafts: The Goodison Gift to the Fitzwilliam Museum’. London: Philip Wilson Publishers: Annette Meech studied Industrial Design at the University of Leicester followed by an MA in Glass Design at the Royal College of Art, London. In 1971, whilst still a student at the Royal College, she was introduced to the work of the Glasshouse in London. This was the beginning of a twenty six year involvement with the organisation that included overseeing its move from the small creative workshop established by Sam Herman (b.1936) to a thriving commercial and creative business in new premises in Long Acre, where it moved in 1975. Between 1972 and 1983, Meech was also a design consultant for Ravenhead Glass, and between 1984 and 1994 she taught at West Surrey College of Art and Design. In 1999 she moved to France, establishing the studio Glasshouse de Sivignon which she still runs with her partner Christopher Williams (b.1949). Creating one-off pieces and functional objects for production has always been part of her studio practice, underpinned by a fascination with the malleability and colour ranges possible with the medium. Recent works have included kiln-formed decorative panels. Annette Meech: ‘We work in an old converted barn next to our home where we welcome visitors and from where we export our designs internationally. On a smaller scale the spirit of the Glasshouse lives on. We continue to take on assistants from local colleges, some of whom may become the next generation of European glassmakers.’
