Description

Pot and lid. The pot pale is buff earthenware, marbled on the exterior in grey. The lid is white earthenware decorated with a multi-colour underglaze transfer print. The cylindrical pot splays out slightly towards the base, which is recessed. At the top it has a ledge to support the cover, which is domed with a narrow rim. The cover is decorated on top with Girl with Grapes also known as Sharing the Gains inscribed 'MURILLO PINX' below; border Fig. VIII g.. The transfer-print has integral initials 'JA' for Jesse Austin (1806-79) at the bottom. On the base of the pot, printed in pink 'J GOSNELL & Co/L [indistinct LONDON] within an oval frame with a tied ribbon at the bottom, the name of the firm for whom the pot was commissioned.
