The artist Jean Marchand (1882-1941) was a close friend of Jacques and Gwen Raverat. This portrait was executed in the year that Jacques died. See also studies in Sketchbooks PD.62-1994 ff.17 verso and 24 recto, and PD.63-1994 f.23 recto, 1922-23.
