Description

Coverboards covered with white linen. Off-white paper. Collocation: four gatherings containing the following number of leafs: eight (one attached to front cover); eight; eight; seven (one cut and one attached to back cover). Portrait studies including ?[Charles] G. Darwin, Ka Cox, ?[Le Pwy]. Many studies as if for paintings or engravings, including figures, also part and entire figure studies associated to them. Most in latter part of sketchbook inverted as if book used from both ends. Blank pages: 11(verso), 12(verso), 27(recto) and 30(verso).

Note

This sketchbook contains preliminary ideas and drawings for the following engravings: 'Death and the Philosopher' [23], [24] ?1910/13. inc. putto holding plaque for motto. Pen and ink studies also on page 28(recto) (inverted), man crouched over desk, page 8(recto), draped woman standing in the wind and page 6(recto), ?corpse attended by two putto with brands. Other detailed studies include Page 20(recto) (inverted) men at a ?butcher's shop Man measuring thread page 21(recto) Standing girl with plait and a hat page 17(verso), two women standing looking across a stormy field page 5(recto), reclining man ?blessing kneeling one page 5(verso).
