Factory: Chamberlain's Worcester Porcelain Factory
Soft-paste porcelain, decorated with a view of Cambridge on the front, underglaze with a dark blue ground, and overglaze in polychrome enamels, and gilt.
Soft-paste porcelain jug, decorated underglaze with a dark blue ground, and overglaze in blue, green, yellow, brown, grey and black enamels, and gilding. The jug has a cylindrical neck with projecting spout, narrow sloping shoulder, tapering cylindrical body moulded in slight relief with swirling gadroons, and a harp-shaped handle. On the front below the spout there is a rectangular gilt frame containing a view of a lady and gentleman watching punting on the Cam, with Clare and King's College Chapel in the distance. The sides are decorated with alternately blue and white panels decorated respectively with lines of husk-like motifs, and stylised plant motifs in gold. On the shoulder there is a band of gold-framed blue circles dotted with gold, linked by gold foliage. The neck has a blue ground decorated on each side with two four-petalled flower heads and stylised foliage flanking an oval white and gold medallion. The spout is white with gold scattered stars above a fan or shell motif. There are single gold bands round the base, the junction of the neck and shoulder, and the rim. The handle is decorated with gold lines down the sides, and stylised foliage and a vertical line down the back. The base is inscribed 'Cambridge' in purple enamel.

Analysis of early Chamberlain's Worcester, and the evidence for its materials available at the factory indicates that it was a type of hard-paste, and not like the original Worcester factory's steatitic soft-paste porcelain. The view on the jug was taken from a print entitled 'CAMBRIDGE' by W. & J. Walker, first produced iin 'The Copper Plate Magazine', and in February 1793 in 1798 in 'The Itinerant' The print is inscribed 'Engraved by W. & J. Walker from an Original Drawing by J. Walker figures by Burney' and 'Published Feby 1st 1793 by J. Walker, No 16 Roseman Street'.
