Description

Tortoise shell with gilt metal mounts studded with four circles of paste diamonds, the lid set with a miniature of flowers by a chaffinch on a carved urn

Tortoise shell set with a miniature in watercolour and bodycolour, probably on card, mounted under glass in gilt metal studded with paste diamonds. The circular box has straight sides and a flat pull-off lid. Round the edge and side of the lid and base are gilt metal mounts in two colours of gold. The outer red gold border is set with a row of paste diamonds; the inner yellow gold border is stamped with a pattern of stylised leaves. The circular miniature depicts flowers, including roses, poppies and narcissi, next to a chaffinch on a carved two handled Classical urn, all on a marble slab.
