Text from object entry in A. Game (2016) ‘Contemporary British Crafts: The Goodison Gift to the Fitzwilliam Museum’. London: Philip Wilson Publishers: Christine Jones is based in Swansea. Her first solo exhibition entitled Clay Circles was at Mission Gallery in 1985. The clay is coloured using stains and oxides. Vessels are built on a pinch pot base with two or three coils added each day, taking up to two or more weeks to complete. The potter often uses silica sand to texture the surface before firing. Jones received the Gold Medal for Craft and Design, National Eisteddfod of Wales 2000, and in 2006 received the Arts Council of Wales Creative Wales Award. Christine Jones: ‘Clay is primary, magical in its transformation from soft clay to hard ceramic. The material and the technique of coiling and the form are central. The colour, light and space of the Welsh coastline are my inspiration and passion.’
