Description

Hard paste porcelain, painted overglaze with red, pale red, aubergine and black enamels and gold. Circular with shallow rounded sides lightly fluted into sixteen lobes with correspondingly scalloped rim, standing on a low tapering footring. A scalloped medallion impressed in the centre is outlined in gold and contains a peony spray. The cavetto is delicately painted with seven butterflies in flight among plants. The black decoration on the butterflies is protected with extra glaze. The leaves outlined in gold, some with the veins finely delineated and some filled in. The rim is banded in gold. The outside is decorated with three flower sprays of peony, chrysanthemum and plum heavily outlined in gold. Six firing spurs on the glazed convex base.
