Octagonal rice bowl. Hard paste porcelain, thickly potted, painted underglaze in blue and overglaze in red and pale red enamels, and gold in Imari style. Round bowl flaring out to an octagonal shape via a slightly concave (inverted) border. Straight, circular foot and flat glazed base. Decorated inside with a central flower sprig in underglaze blue within a double line circle, and on the rim with a floral scroll border. The outside is painted in pale underglaze blue outline and wash and red edged in gold with two quails in flight and two standing amid millet. The rim was originally edged in gold which has worn leaving a violet residue of colloidal gold.
