Description

Hard-paste porcelain, painted underglaze in blue and overglaze with red, pale-red, violet, and green enamels, and gold in Imari style. Circular body with straight sides rising from a low tapered footring. Rounded overhead strap handle flaring at the lower ends, each of which has an applied with a chrysanthemum rosette. The short horseshoe-shaped spout projects from the base of the handle. The circular cover is slightly convex and has a small rounded knob, and an unglazed inner rim. The body is decorated on the one side with peony and foliage emerging from a red cloud scroll, and on the other with thistles and foliage emerging from a red cloud scroll. Below there is a border of narrow rectangular narrow petals. The top of the handle, the sides of the spout, and the shoulder are decorated with a band of floral scroll (tako karakusa). The edge of the spout is gilt. The lid is decorated with karakusa scroll between narrow blue lines, and the top of the knob is blue. Two firing spurs on the flat, glazed base of the pot.
